Maker Monday: The Fluid Art of John Oh
JOHN OH
RADIANT CANVAS
“With [fluid art], you keep manipulating the paint ’til you like it.. and then you just let it go.”
FAST FIVE Q&A:
What are you making?
Fluid art – painting with acrylics and acrylic inks without brushes.
How do you paint without brushes?
I use all kinds of other tools: palette knives, balloons, a blow torch, marbles.. you can even use your breath to manipulate the paint.
When did you start making fluid art?
This year (2024), but I’ve been working in traditional oil and acrylic painting since the early 1990s.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I just pick the colors I like, and start playing!
Why did you choose this particular medium?
Painting in this way is therapeutic and meditative. There’s less stress than in subject painting because it’s abstract, so that removes the elements of self-doubt and judgment. With this, you keep manipulating the paint ’til you like it.. and then you just let it go.
